Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I put the code into my website?

A: To put the code into your website:

  • go first to the myTicker page and set up the channels and content.
  • then go to the myParameters page which is linked from the myTicker page and set up the colours, size and typefaces
  • click 'Get Code' at the bottom of the myParameters page
  • put your mouse over the text to select it directly off the page
  • copy it all (right click your mouse and press copy) and then paste it directly into the html page of your own site.
Q: I have had your ticker for a long time, but it has now changed and I want to change it to suit my site.

A: Yes, we have upgraded the ticker system with better news, scores, schedules and reports, and also the ability for you to input your own channels. It is now a commercial venture - so if you'd like to change the appearance of the ticker, please start a subscription and insert the new code. You will then have full control over its appearance and content.

Q: How do I put images into my ticker?

A: Images, video and audio are not yet supported. Please look back periodically to check our progress on this.

Q: What is a web address (URL) and how do I find it?

A: A web address (URL) looks something like:

www.wldcup.com/newstick/this.html

It is the name of the page or web site that you want to put the news ticker onto.

One way of finding the page address is - while you are in an Internet Explorer Browser - go to the page on which you want to put the news ticker and right click on it away from any images or flash files.

Click on where it says 'Properties' and under 'address' it will show the page address.

Q: I can't set it up.

A: If you've paid then make sure you're putting it onto the website that you said you'd be putting it onto.

Don't try to use the source code that we use for the test ticker, that is only for the test ticker and it won't work on your site. Only use the source code that we give you when you click 'Get Code' on the myTickers page or the myParameters page.

It is usually a simple cut and paste from our 'Get Code' page onto into your web page URL.

Make sure you include all the code including the javascript code that we give you.

Q: What is bandwidth?

A: Bandwidth is the amount of data (measured in Megabits or Gigabits) that is transferred when someone loads the ticker or 'pulls' information into it.

If for example you add your own content and you add your own news article that is extremely big (say 0.5 Mb) then if two people read it from two different tickers then the bandwidth that your ticker uses will increase by approximately 2 x 0.5 Mb = 1 Mb. Probably just a bit more because the ticker has to internally ask for this information.

Bandwidth
If you take our ticker, we serve you the pages. This means that we have to send it from our servers which uses our bandwidth! Whilst a certain amount is included in your subscription, and 95% of sites don't exceed this allowance, we still need to allow for very busy sites.
Bandwidth Pricing
We have negotiated low excess bandwidth charges with our suppliers and can offer it to you at the very low cost of just US$9.95 per Gb of data transfer. (When negotiating our own deals we were quoted as high as $80 per Gb so it may be that $9.95 is considerably lower than you are paying already!)
Bandwidth allowances are not transferrable across ticker accounts.
Very Busy Sites
If you are not sure if you are going to exceed these levels then just select the button for automatic billing - (you'll only be billed if you go over the limit), or if your site is very busy then please call us and we can test your site traffic as regards the ticker and maybe discuss different hosting options.
Our contact details for this are:
International telephone: +44 20 8871 5119
UK telephone: 020 8871 5119
Q: What happens if my website traffic exceeds the bandwidth allowance of 500 Mb per month?

A: When you set up a new ticker, select the option that allows us to automatically bill you if you go over the limit. It is only US9.95 per Gb, or, if you've already set the ticker up give our technical department a call and we can alter your payment options. If your site is particularly busy then give us a call and we can discuss a different hosting arrangement.

Q: How do I reduce my bandwidth charges?

A: One way to reduce it is to reduce the amount of content that you show your customers. It may for instance be that you are inputting your own content and have put in a HUGE file. This means that everytime someone reads it they download this file and in doing so add to your (and our) bandwidth useage. You can reduce this problem by splitting your content into more than one channel or by reducing it.

However, having said that, we have set the excess charges at a very low level so even a hugely busy site will be paying less for bandwidth than they would ordinarily be paying for the content alone from different suppliers.

Q: How do you deliver such high quality content so cheaply?

A: Its simple, the more sites that take our content, the better service we can offer. The less we charge the more sites will take it! So please tell your friends about us.

Q: If I'm only allowed three of the same ticker on one website - what if I have dynamically generated pages.

A: Then it is only for one area of your site that would be reasonably be considered a page (or section).

Q: How do I delete my ticker account

A: Go to your myTicker page and near the bottom there is a link where you can close your account for the ticker in question. If you have more than one ticker then make sure you have chosen the right one at the top of the page before you go to the delete button!

Be sure not to delete a channel that has content that you want to keep. Once its deleted, its gone for good.

Q: Does the ticker work on Macs?

A: No: Macs have traditionally not been very good at supporting Java applets although they are improving. Because applets crash some Macs (because of the Mac Java code rather than the applet) the easiest thing for us to do is to not serve this applet to ANY Mac. We will gradually become more specific as to which type of Mac to allow and disallow as support for Java improves.

Q: How do I change a ticker from one site to another?

A: You can't do this. Each ticker you buy is associated with a particular site and won't work on another.

Q: Will my email address be sold, or given to anyone else than NewsTick Limited.

A: No. We will not give, rent, swap or sell your email address to anyone else. We'll use it to let you know if there's more content channels introduced or other stuff directly related to the ticker. Only!

Q: Why doesn't my browser let me in ?
